Victory Over Blindness

The ‘Victory Over Blindness’ bronze sculpture is a work of national significance that represents the important rehabilitation work undertaken in Manchester to assist blind armed services veterans. Sited outside the entrance to Manchester Piccadilly Station, the sculpture has a direct link to the past and is a gateway to the city, which Blind Veterans UK hope will inspire future generations, just as previous generations were inspired to help others to Accept, Adjust and Achieve. Blind Veterans UK commissioned the artist Johanna Domke-Guyot to design the sculpture. The Victory over Blindness sculpture echos the painting ʻGassed', by John Singer Sargent which was commissioned by the Ministry of Information to commemorate the Great War and which now hangs in the Imperial War Museum, Salford. Mike Macpherson Architects was appointed on a voluntary basis to oversee the planning of the installation of the sculpture, as the project required planning permission and extensive liaison with Network Rail to agree the location, safe methods of working on site, and ensuring the station entrance remained open.
